These designs are based on what was my first attempt at a overall scenic concept for a complete work in my first year of training. This is the third version of the originals, the first two done in pastel.
The intention is to stage all scenes of the opera using the same set as a base but suggesting each different scene by the addition of new elements. While this has become the usual practice in design now, when these were first designed, it was still seen as a rather novel idea. Over the years the concept has evolved from it's stark beginnings into what is almost an overripe flower, a tribute to designers of the past.
