The Red Priest
As the years roll on the talent of Antonio Vivaldi gains increasing popularity and for good reason. There is an embarrassment of riches as recordings of his operas entering the catalogue on a regular basis.
One of my most treasured in recent years has to be without doubt the stunning Griselda from the label Naive, who are releasing the entire works of this Baroque Master to great acclaim. With the likes of Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Simone Kermes and Philippe Jaroussky in the cast, this recording is hard to beat and will surely be the benchmark of Baroque performance for many years.
For example, the aria below, once made popular by Cecilia Bartoli is given a stunning treatment by the indefatigable Simone Kermes. It's one of my favourite displays of Baroque bravura and quite simply out of this world. Have a listen and enjoy this very OTT tribute to the Red Priest on his birthday. Even the cover art is awesome.
