On Your Centenary Blanche Thebom

Renowned for her flowing dark tresses and gorgeously dark mezzo, Blanche Thebom was a reigning mezzo at the Met for a total of 357 performances over 23 seasons.  Amneris was her signature role at the house and she sang with some of the most famous Aida's of the time including Renata Tebaldi, Zinka Milanov, Ljuba Welitsch, Antionetta Stella and Herva Nelli.

Thebom also featured in the films When Irish Eyes Are Smiling and The Great Caruso during her career as a singer and post retirement worked as director in Atlanta for 6 years.

Her most famous recording is of Brangane in the immortal Furtwangler recording of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde with Kirsten Flagstad and Ludwig Suthaus from 1953.  You can revel in her exquisite Watch from Act 2 here as a perfect celebration of this remarkable singer's centenary.  Have a great weekend.
