The Gré Brouwenstijn Centenary
The great Dutch soprano Gré Brouwenstijn is a particular favourite of mine, especially in the Wagnerian repertoire. Her Sieglinde is well documented and she sang the role to justified great acclaim. I have a couple of her recorded Sieglindes, including the studio recording with Leinsdorf and the '55 Keilberth, both of which I adore.
As a contrast however I thought to share with you some of her equally acclaimed Verdian singing and while Brouwenstijn's Elisabetta (Don Carlo) is well known, her Desdemona is certainly worth hearing too.
Fortunately there is a studio recording of a collection of arias from EMI which has both roles featured and below you can hear her Tu Che le Vanita from Don Carlo and the beautiful Willow Song and Ave Maria from Otello.
Together they show a glimpse into the work of one of the Mid-Twentieth Century's great soprano voices and a shining example of Gré Brouwenstijn's recorded legacy.
