Edvard Grieg

Edvard Grieg's music has been a cornerstone of the Classical repertoire for many years, his Peer Gynt Suite being among the most popular of orchestral pieces.  You'd be hard pressed to find anyone in the Western World who hasn't heard his Morning Mood for example - perhaps one of the most famous pieces of Classical Music ever written.

A couple of years ago I purchased a copy of the complete incidental music for Peer Gynt in a highly original recording of the work for the Naxos label with the Malmo Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Bjarte Engeset.  It remains my favourite recording of this glorious work and I've posted the awesome rendition of In The Hall Of The Mountain King before.

Today I'm opting for the ravishing rendition of Solveig's Song from this recording sung by Isa Katharina Gericke as a tribute to this remarkable composer to mark the anniversary of his birth.  The melancholy of this song reaches right to your heart and here is presented in such almost folk-like simplicity it's hard to resist.
