Viewing this picture today reminded me that today is the birth date of one of the great interpreters of Wotan on disc and stage from the mid 20th Century, George London.
His voice of dark, granite-like strength and steadiness were perfect for the father figure in Wagner's tetralogy of Der Ring des Nibelungenlied. You can hear his recording of the Abscheid from the final scene of Die Walkure below.
This recording is one of my favourites of this scene, recorded in Decca's glorious early stereo under the direction of Eric Leinsdorf. It remains a classic to this day.
