Wiesław Ochman - February 6, 1937 -
I'd like to share with you today, on the occasion of his birthday, a brief tribute to the talent of Polish tenor Wieslaw Ochman. He appeared on the first recording of Salome I ever bought, as the guard infatuated with Strauss' princess who eventually kills himself in despair, Narraboth.
His youthful, slender tenor, not to mention looks, were perfect for the role and you can see him, rather scantily clad in the Gotz Friedrich classic film of the opera opposite Teresa Stratas in the title role.
Highly admirable is his contribution to the music of fellow compatriot Karol Szymanowski. His beautiful tenor is perfect for the role of the Shepherd in the composer's intensely homoerotic, quasi-spiritual venture that has now seen somewhat of a renaissance, King Roger. He recorded much of Szymanowski's music for tenor on the Naxos label and he can also be found in Karl Bohm's recording of Idomeneo of Deustsche Grammaphon among other gems including the music of Carl Orff.
