Günther Schneider-Siemssen: Two Sketches for Salome

Ever since I bought my first LP of Strauss' Salome, Karajan's classic studio rendition for EMI with Hildegard Behrens as Salome I've been captivated by the set design of Gunther Schneider-Siemssen.

His concept of the 'Stage as Cosmic Space' remains to me an inspiration in my own works of art and evokes an impression of otherworldly qualities that still resonate today. The works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss and William Shakespeare are central to his art, his repertoire extensive on both stage and screen.

Today this legend of 20th Century Theatre turns 88.
