At the inspired age of 104, today the beloved soprano Magda Olivero celebrates her birthday. A life like hers can only be described as phenomenal, a career that spanned over 50 years she remains to this day a living Operatic Treasure.
The YouTube clip of Olivero singing at 99 years old is well known, as beautiful as it is I won't be showing it here.
Instead I wish to share Adriana Levouvreur, one of the roles which was central to Olivero's fach. She sang this with an array of star tenors and mezzo's and helped keep this under-appreciated gem in the current repertoire.
There are a few remaining recordings of live performances, in varying quality, but I'd like to draw your attention to this unique studio recording of Io son l'umile ancella.
