Hermann Uhde

On behalf of one of the great bass-baritones of the Twentieth Century, Hermann Uhde today we celebrate his 99th birthday.  One of the great Dutchman's of the new Bayreuth he was a striking stage presence with a beautiful voice.  I will always treasure his live 'Hollander' recording with the Senta of Astrid Varnay.  His was a voice of velvet.
