It's Festival Time!
February is the cultural jewel in the West Australian Arts calendar crown with not one but two Festivals running concurrently: Perth International Arts Festival and the FringeWorld Festival. Each is hugely successful with a diverse program and this year is no exception.
So I’m going to be rather busy over the coming weeks, in particular over the next eight days so there may not be as many opportunities for me to post. Below are the shows I will be attending next week:
Robert Wilson directs the Berliner Ensemble in this Brecht/Weill classic. I’ve long been a great lover of this score since being assistant designer on the John Milson directed production at WAAPA back in 1989. John’s recent passing will make this production all the more special to me. It opens tonight and continues through to Tuesday.
Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Fraser are back with a new album and tour. Their first in 16 years this is highly awaited and a dream come true for those of us who never dreamed we would get the chance to see this amazing group live. They perform at the Perth Concert Hall on Saturday February 9. From the reports I’ve heard from the concerts in Sydney and Melbourne it will be more than worth the wait.
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Another band I only ever dreamed of seeing live. Their amazingly diverse blend of Post Rock sounds are sure to be a highlight of events in the Festival Gardens, playing on Monday February 11.
Rachael Dease: City Of Shadows
A crowd and personal favourite from last year’s Fringe Festival, which travelled to New York as a result, Rachel Dease returns to Fringe with the haunting and exquisite City Of Shadows. She deservedly received a standing ovation for this in the show I saw last year. I’d walk over hot coals to see this again. I’m attending the Wednesday February 13 concert. Can’t wait.
Philip Glass In Conversation
While Philip Glass is here performing his piano etudes, which incidentally is sold out, he is also to be seen at the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley in conversation with ABC Radio’s Andrew Ford next Friday 15 at 6pm. I’m looking forward to this immensely, hearing the great man talk about his work and career is truly something not to miss.
